The SDJR 'proper' ran from Corfe Mullen in the south to Evercreech (originally) and then to the west to Burnham. (It was even advertised a s "a coast-to-coast" railway.

Later the extension to Bath was built and this became the main line. The west line to Burnham being "The Branch"

The last mile or so from Bath Junction to Bath Green Park was not really S&DJR either, it being on Midland metals.

The highest point, over the Mendips, was Masbury.
For much of its length especially in the northern section the line was steeply graded, often single-line and with double reverse curves.
The scenery was/is beautiful!

At present, only the Midsomer Norton to Chilcompton line is being restored. Other S&DJR projects include restoration of Shillingstone
