ZLREFLdAfTRNLOb The canal was promoted by the mine owners of the North Somerset coalfields as a cheaper means of bLREFLdAfTRNLO jtransporting their coal to the markets in Bath and the surrounding area. (At that time the only transport jLREFLdAfTRNLO dwas by pack-horse or horse and cart, over rough terrain. These animals could only cope with limited dLREFLdAfTRNL)O -quantities, which resulted in high prices ). -LREFLdAfTRNL4O g The mine owners were also worried over the possible effect the flood of good Welsh coal might have on gLREFLdAfTRNL?O Htheir market for there had been plans to import such coal into Bristol HLREFLdAfTRNLJO LREFLdAfTRNLcO c Surveyed by John Rennie (of Kennet & Avon Canal fame), with help from William Smith (1769-1839) - cLREFLdAfTRNLnO g(the "Father of English Geology", whose writings influenced Charles Darwin); the canal was to have two gLREFLdAfTRNLyO [arms, with connecting tramroads, to the many coal pits in the Radstock and Timsbury areas. [LREFLdAfTRNLO h (June 2001) A new and very-well reviewed book has just been published on William Smith. Please visit:A 0fLREFLREFLdAfTRNLO link to Bath University. DLREFLREFLREFLdAfTRNLO N(The book is:"The Map that Changed the World" by S Winchester. Penguin Books) NLREFLdAfTRNLO 4 William Smith also built a tramway at Tuckingmill lLREFLREFLREFLREFLREFLdAfTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO &Map of the Somersetshire Coal Canal. 0#LREFLREFLdAfTRNL O The original plan was for there to be a 3/4 mile tunnel at Combe Hay but this was later rejected becasue of cost and thus the canal became a "summit"canal. One LREFLdAfTRNLO?problem with both of these arms was the climb/fall of 135feet. ?LREFLdAfTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO Starting at Dundas Aqueduct, on the Kennet & Avon at Limpley Stoke, the main arm would pass to the west through Monkton Combe, Midford, Combe Hay, LREFLdAfTRNL)O Dunkerton and Camerton to the basins at Paulton and Timsbury. At Midford the other arm would head towards Radstock via Wellow and Writhlington. The LREFLdAfTRNL4O Paulton arm (or sometimes called the Dunkerton line) was constructed at two levels, the upper level from Paulton to Combe Hay, and the lower level from LREFLdAfTRNL?O Combe Hay to Limpley Stoke. In later years, at the top of the Combe Hay part was a steam pumping engine (see later). However, at first, to "bridge" the LREFLdAfTRNLJO wdaunting difference in altitude between these two parts, there were to be the three Caisson Locks (pic) at Combe Hay. lTLREFLREFLREFLREFLREFLdAfTRNLVO J (Picture from The Daily Telegraph... "How the lock worked 362 kb file"). 0LREFILREFLdAfTRNLbO LREFLdAfTRNLnO These were experimental locks consisting of a large masonry chamber or 'cistern' in which a watertight box - the Caisson - was suspended. This box was large 0LREFLREFLdAfTRNLzO enough to take a full length boat, which was floated into it and then, with the doors closed, was raised or lowered to the desired level. LREFLdAfTRNLO \ Adrian of the SCC has now completed an excellent series of diagrams to show how it works. \LREFLdAfTRNLO % See Adrian's Caisson "how it works" DLREFLREFLREFLdAfTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO Although the maker - one R. Weldon was able to demonstrate the whole mechanism in working order, it was not a success. It is thought that this was because of LREFLdAfTRNLO the Fullers' earth rock stratum in this area. It, (like Cat Litter) swells when in contact with water; the masonary walls must have buckled and trapped the caisson. LREFLdAfTRNLO LHistory & further details. It was replaced by an inclined plane (Nov.1801). XLREFLREFLREF1LREFLdAfTRNLO This appears to have been the normal double acting type where coal was craned from the barges in wooden containers capable of transporting about 1 ton of LREFLdAfTRNLO coal each. Three of these were placed in each wagon. This wagon descended by gravity, the 300 yards in 5 mins, pulling up empty waggons from below by LREFLdAfTRNLO xmeans of a continuous pulley system with the heavy chains passing around two equal sized wheels at the top and bottom. xLREFLdAfTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO Excvation of a possible site for the caisson is now taking place. This lock was one of the "wonders of the waterway world"; its exact construction and LREFLdAfTRNLO mechanism is unknown. No matter how excited you may feel over its potential discovery please note that the site is on private land! DLREFnLREF LREF LdAfTRNL O The inclined plane at Combe Hay was also unsuccessful, mainly due to the time consuming and inefficient trans-shipment of goods, and was eventually LREF LdAfTRNL#O }replaced, in April 1805, by a flight of twenty two locks, ( 3 had already been built near the bottom of the inclined plain). }LREF LdAfTRNL.O One part of this new and costly venture was shaped like a bull's nose - still to be seen today. (See map). The large loss of water necessitated the building of a LREF LdAfTRNL9O Boulton & Watt Steam Pumping Station capable of lifting 5 000 tons of water in 12 hours. It needed a water supply -probably from lock 19. From here it is DLREF LREF vLREF LdAfTRNLDO vproposed that an underground adit (with a fall of 1:40) took the water up the 'middle' of the bullnose to the engine, vLREF LdAfTRNLOO LREF LdAfTRNLZO This pump was later dismantled and moved to Dunnkerton to join a near-identical partner. If you click on Dunkerton pump you will see it (to the left). (Len XiLREF LREFLREF$LREFLdAfTRNLeO Bampfylde collection) LREFLdAfTRNLpO Nearby was Dunkerton Wharf c1900. The cut from the coal filed to here was the first part to be opened and within 6 months 2 wagons per day were hauling D LREFLREFwLREFLdAfTRNL{O [coal from the wharf inro Bath at a cost of 2 shillings per ton, much less tha previously. [LREFLdAfTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO A - We believe we have found the route of the adit! See:Adit map lLREFLREF5LREF LREFLREFLdAfTRNLO Adrian writes: 0LREFLREFLdAfTRNLO "You will now find it is drawn straight and with two intermediate shafts - This is because Richard Hignett came up just before LREFLdAfTRNLO Christmas and found the spoil heaps from what appear to be the intermediate shafts. It all adds up to a straight adit. A very exciting LREFLdAfTRNLO find because it was made from a prediction based on engineering calculations, we didn't just blunder about and trip over the shafts. LREFLdAfTRNLO Richard actually reasoned where they should be and went straight to them. We are kicking ourselves for not spotting them before, LREFLdAfTRNLO kone of them was only yards from where we were moving wood; but, of course, we didn't have his knowledge". 0jLREFLREFLdAfTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO U As you can see, this area at Combe Hay, is a very interesting one to say the least. This was similar to the ill-fated Weldon design but had two caissons, in D4LREF$LREF&KLREF'LdAfTRNL)O fcounterbalance, separated by a masonry wall. The inclined plane and extra locks might never have been! fLREF'LdAfTRNL4O LREF'LdAfTRNL?O G (Caissons were also built on the not-too-distant Great Western Canal) D2LREF'LREF)LREF*LdAfTRNLJO LREF*LdAfTRNLUO However, in the last month another, untapped (?) source has been found. For more detail see: History & further details. XfLREF*LREF,LREF.LREF/LdAfTRNLkO LREF/LdAfTRNLvO LREF/LdAfTRNLO LREF/LdAfTRNLO Why are there no pictures from this era? Because the world's first photograph by the Frenchman Nipce was not taken until 1827. Even then long-term DLREF/)LREF0kLREF1LdAfTRNLO afixing of the image was impossible. This had to wait until Daguerre's work in Paris 1839. Sorry! aLREF1LdAfTRNLO LREF1LdAfTRNLO The Society has actively conserved most of these locks. Although all wooden structures have long since gone, all the walls etc are intact. Regular working LREF1LdAfTRNLO 5parties are held at the site. See later for details. 5LREF1LdAfTRNLO LREF1LdAfTRNLO As to the other "arm", there are conflicting records as to its (economic) success. Engineering features include the tunnel near to St Julian's Church (picture soon LREF1LdAfTRNLO to follow), recently excavated, and the sharp turn near to St Julian's Well. During this time (1805), the length of canal from Radstock to Twinhoe was built and to l:LREF1LREF3LREF5LREF7WLREF8LdAfTRNLO `avoid the expense of further locks to take the canal downhill to Midford, a tramway was built. `LREF8LdAfTRNLO Again, because of the trans-shipment of goods at Twinhoe and the low level of traffic on this branch, it was eventually decided to extend the tramway all the way LREF8LdAfTRNLO :into Radstock, using the towpath as the bed of the track. :LREF8LdAfTRNLO Pics of Twinhoe basin ...now (&then?)This was 7 1/4 miles long, single track, with passing loops every 600yards. Teams of 3 horses would haul 8 or 9 wagons of about XLREF8%LREF: LREF;uLREF<LdAfTRNLO 11cwt each. LREF<LdAfTRNLO LREF<LdAfTRNL%O This would leave the only trans-shipment point at Midford Basin where this Radstock tramway and the Paulton canal arm met, converging over an aqueduct. Presumbaly built on stone with LREF^LdAfTRNL O the bridge itself being made of wood. This may date from April 1802, with a replacement in situ approx March 1812 (costing 36) Entries in Smith's diaries show LREF^LdAfTRNL O that planning started in the summer of 1810 and was well advanced by the 26 January 1811.Then he agreed to sell Tucking Mill Meadows to Conolly for 1 330, LREF^LdAfTRNL O presumably to finance the scheme. On the 9 April 1811, his diary records: 'agreed with Mr Conolly for 0'Neal to begin his (Conolly's) part of the Railway'. Exactly LREF^LdAfTRNL O a month later he wrote to Conolly: 'Iron rails must be ordered'. An inclined plane was undoubtedly necessary for part of the descent to Tucking Mill, and on 16 May LREF^LdAfTRNL O 1811 Smith was 'at Bath, writing on . . . Rollers &c'. On 26 May 1811 he signed a 'conveyance and agreement for a lease of the Land & Stone & Railway'. Smith LREF^LdAfTRNL O saw John Thomas of the Kennet and Avon Canal an 9 June 1811 and 'agreed with him for 32 tons Rails for Mr C and 13 for myself at 8.7.0.' The ranal (sic) LREF^LdAfTRNL 'O 1Journal records this transaction in more detail: 1LREF^LdAfTRNL 3O LREF^LdAfTRNL ?O Laying of the rails was in progress during August 1811, when Smith spent several days at Tucking Mill. On the 15th he 'ordered better spikes to be used in laying LREF^LdAfTRNL KO the rails'; on the 17th he 'went to Railway and advised about the laying &c'; on the 18th 'Mr Wm Hill called and talked over the-proposed sawing of stone by the LREF^LdAfTRNL WO power of my waterfall'. - A second boatload of Iron Rails arrived an the 23rd. It is thought that some of the rail used was second-hand from the Caen Hill flight (on DLREF^LREF`LREF^LdAfTRNL cO the Kennet & Avon Canal). LREF^LdAfTRNL oO b On the 26th he sent the terms of a proposed co-partnership in stone manufacture to J Lowder Esq, bLREF^LdAfTRNL {O BArchitect. Smith was still pursuing this matter in February 1812. BLREF^LdAfTRNL O g - Smith ordered the saws for the stone manufactory in August 1812, and in late October was at Tucking DLREF^LREFaeLREF^LdAfTRNL O Mill 'continuing LREF^LdAfTRNL|O improvements to the saw LREF^LdAfTRNL|O frames.' early in LREF^LdAfTRNL|O November, attention LREF^LdAfTRNL|O switched to the quarry LREF^LdAfTRNL|O where an the 6th he saw LREF^LdAfTRNL|O the 'quarry arch opened' LREF^LdAfTRNL|O This undoubtedly refers to LREF^LdAfTRNL|O the entrance tunnel into LREF^LdAfTRNL|O the quarry, thus the whole LREF^LdAfTRNL| O scheme probably came to LREF^LdAfTRNL|O fruition during November LREF^LdAfTRNL|#O 1812. LREF^LdAfTRNL|/O P- In April 1814, Smith mortgaged the remainder of his estate to Charles Conolly 0LREFbOLREF^LdAfTRNL|;O *including Tucking Mill Wood, on which the *LREF^LdAfTRNL|GO ('upper side thereof was made a railroad (LREF^LdAfTRNL|SO (communicating with the Railroad of .. . MDLREF^LdAfTRNL O t When the quarry and railway ceased working is not known but, as late as May 1819, a Mr Frost visited him in London MtLREF^LdAfTRNL O {and talked 'of going down to Bath &c to see Tucking Mill and stone of a hard quality for paving'. A month later, an the 11 M{LREF^LdAfTRNL O uJune, Conolly had Smith committed to the Kings Bench Prison for debt and by 1820 Tucking Mill belonged to Conolly ". MuLREF^LdAfTRNL O wThe lower part of the railway is clearly defined from Smith's house (ST 765 615) to just north of Tucking Mill viaduct MwLREF^LdAfTRNL O z(ST 764 617) a distance of about 350 Yards, rising at a gradient of near 1:10. This length appears to have been of single MzLREF^LdAfTRNL O qtrack and not rope worked. Descending wagons were probably braked with sprags inserted between the spokes of the MqLREF^LdAfTRNL +O {wheels. A few single-hole stone sleeper blocks can still be seen. These, together with a rail fragment and some nails show M{LREF^LdAfTRNL 7O athat plate rails were used. A small quarry above the railway was linked to it by a short siding. MaLREF^LdAfTRNL CO MLREF^LdAfTRNL OO z- Beyond the viaduct there is no definite trace of the railway, but it is likely that the present footpath to Summer Lane M0LREFcyLREF^LdAfTRNL [O ,follows it very closely. The tunnel is made of unmortared scappled freestone OLREF^LdAfTRNL|O Oblocks, and has fallen in about 30 ft from the entrance. It undoubtedly led to OLREF^LdAfTRNL|O Tunderground workings. Recent excavations showed that it once extended closer to the TLREF^LdAfTRNL|O Lane. See above picture LREF^LdAfTRNL|O LREF^LdAfTRNL|O T Besides stone, the railway may have carried sand used for bread-oven floors, which TLREF^LdAfTRNL|O XSmith obtained from small tunnels driven into the hillside behind his house. Each end of the Caisson, LREF|LdAfTRNL(?O when brought in contact with the square apertures of the reservoir, is also water- tight; this is accomplished by an inverted valve, discharging LREF|LdAfTRNL(KO the water from the space between the slide-door of the reservoir and the door of the Caisson, the pressure instantly then fixes the Caisson to LREF|LdAfTRNL(WO the apertures, therefore the slide- door may be opened with much ease, and of course that of the Caisson. The boat may then be received for LREF|LdAfTRNL(cO ascension, the doors re-shut, and the great difficulty of releasing the Caisson from the aperture (against which it was so power- fully pressed) LREF|LdAfTRNL(oO obviated, by opening another valve to refill the space just mentioned; it consequently follows, the pressure on the Caisson will be as before, LREF|LdAfTRNL({O equal on all its sides - by discharging a small quantity of water from the Caisson by means of a cock into the lower Canal, it becomes lighter, LREF|LdAfTRNL(O and instantly ascends to the upper aperture; the same process with the valves completes the design which is truly philosophical" . 0LREF|LREF}LdAfTRNL(O From "The Daily Telegraph" . DLREF~LREFLREFLdAfTRNLO [Adrian of the SCC has now completed an excellent series of diagrams to show how it works. [LREFLdAfTRNLO %See Adrian's Caisson "how it works" DLREF LREFLREFLdAfTRNLO iIn Jan.1796 adverts appeared in the local (Bath) press for masons to build a caisson lock at Combe Hay. iLREFLdAfTRNLO Dimensions were: Chamber: 66 ft deep;width 20ft in middle, tapering to 11ft 6in at each end. LREFLdAfTRNL_O a4th trial 12 days later a spectacular and successful demo. in front of HRH The Prince of Wales! aLREFLdAfTRNLyO T5th trial 10 days later, over 60 ladies and gentlemen took "rides" in the caisson. TLREFLdAfTRNLO R6th trial May 1799. Bulging brick/stone-work caused the wooden caisson to stick. RLREFLdAfTRNLO Another 1 000 was more than the SCC could justify as the work had cost 4 582 so far. (The original estimate was for 1 200; Outram later estimated that it LREFLdAfTRNLO would cost 16 000, although whether this was for one or the complete set of caissons is not clear). Outram recommended that the caisson should be replaced LREFLdAfTRNLO by an inclined plane. As already stated, the probable reason for this was that the whole of the cistern (well) had been cut in the Fullers Earth Measures - a rock LREFLdAfTRNLO formation that swells like cat litter when wet. William Smith from Tuckingmill (on the canal near Midford) the "father of English Geology", surely must have LREFLdAfTRNLO known of this problem, especially as he had visited other areas of England such as the Sapperton Tunnel in 1798 and 1794 which had exactly the same LREFLdAfTRNLO problems and for exactly the same reasons. It may be that this was the reason for him eventually being dismissed from the SCC on the 5th of June 1799 LREFLdAfTRNLO (especially as he had sided, according to a Mrs Eyres - (quoted by Torrens), with the anti-caisson lobby). He should have spoken up sooner! He had also 'taken LREFLdAfTRNLO advantage' of the SCC in building his house on the banks of the SCC at Tuckingmill where, ironically, there later was a Fullers Earth Mill. (The house that LREFLdAfTRNLO Wstands here has a plaque to Smith but this is the wrong house! (It is the next house)) WLREFLdAfTRNL'O Whilst there, Smith planned to open up a Bath Stone quarry higher up the hill side in Combe Down and bring the stone down to Tuckingmill (for loading onto LREFLdAfTRNLAO Qthe Canal) by a tramroad/inclined plane. For more detail see Combe Down Tramway D=LREFLREFLREFLdAfTRNLMO Other candidates for Weldon's failure include the poor Tarras cement-mortar that was used. However this being partly based on the Bath Blue Lias limestones LREFLdAfTRNLgO which had an excellent reputation, not only in use in canals but mines as well, would appear to contradict this notion. A good, detailed article of Weldon's LREFLdAfTRNLsO _caisson can be found at: ICE (Dec 1998) Scroll to Page 8 to read the article by RB Schofield. DLREFLREF8LREFLdAfTRNLO bJane Austen and her father visited the site in 1801, so obviously it had not yet been filled-in. bLREFLdAfTRNLO `The Rev. Warner also visited the site in 1801 ..."but the bason (sic) of which alone remains". `LREFLdAfTRNLO There were plans for another 2-3 such caissons. Certainly the Rev. Warner talks of the building of another caisson lock being suspended, so obviously at least 2 LREFLdAfTRNLO were (partly) built, one (perhaps) marked by a former flag pole, the other 180 feet away & (perhaps) marked by a chestnut tree atop an artificial mound. These LREFLdAfTRNLO n2 markers are important clues it is thought in the location of the positions of the 2 caissons. (See later). nLREFLdAfTRNLO "...(the caisson) may then be easily raised or lowered at pleasure by means of racks and pinions, or chains and pulleys ... from one level to the other...." (lines LREFLdAfTRNLO 12-14 from the patent). This is at variance with the account from Clew, where in the passage describing label 'A', more emphasis appears to be placed on LREFLdAfTRNL O ]increasing the mass of the caisson by admitting water to the caisson, in order to lower it. ]LREFLdAfTRNLO The last 3 lines of the patent do however leave room for the above method as a subsidiary method of (fine) control, ... "...and the machine is further regulated LREFLdAfTRNL1O by means of a pump, an air pipe, and other apparatus, to be applied as occasion may require". (My emphasis). I have not encountered details before of such a DLREFLREF~LREFLdAfTRNL=O "pump". (See later). LREFLdAfTRNLIO However 6 years previous to this (a long time methinks?) the same Canal Company had... "... launched a competition for the 'best means of raising and LREFLdAfTRNLcO :lowering heavy weights from one navigation to another" ". :LREFLdAfTRNLoO The contest was won by Henry Williams and James Loudon, and by 1792 tub-boats were being hauled on rails up and down the steep slope, by teams of men LREFLdAfTRNLO and horses. This was the famous "Hay Inclined Plane". Boats entered and left the water, carried on wheeled cradles. By the year end a steam engine at the top LREFLdAfTRNLO of the incline had been installed, allowing full operation of the incline by a four-man team. It is 305m (333 yd) long and has a vertical rise of over 61m (66 yd) LREFLdAfTRNLO equivalent to twenty-seven canal locks. A pair of five-ton tub-boats could be passed in four minutes whereas it would have taken at least three hours to raise a LREFLdAfTRNLO vessel through conventional locks. The inclined plane worked for just over a century, its last recorded operation was in 1894, and its formal closure in 1907. " LREFLdAfTRNLO It may thus seem strange that the proprietors of the SCC came to favour Weldon's relatively unproven invention, and, even after the failure of Weldon's caisson, LREFLdAfTRNLO approved another version of the inclined plane that obviously was not half as successful as the Hay version! In these next paragraphs it should be noted that 0mLREF1LREFLdAfTRNLO CIE3 has problems reading the French! Netscape appears much better! 0BLREFLREFLdAfTRNLO A Frenchman called Dutens also wrote extensively on the caissons etc in England. This source may well have been overlooked by previous historians. (Mike LREFLdAfTRNLO Clarke reports that the pages of the book had not been cut!). Dutens quoted extensively from both Reess (sic) and Chapman. (Full references are in Clew LREFLdAfTRNLO Y(ibid)). However it is obvious from his writings that he "visited the canal near Bath" . YLREFLdAfTRNLO In a passage he appears to have written himself, and it has to be admitted that it is somewhat ambiguous, Dutens might be suggesting that the caisson had two LREFLdAfTRNL7O doors (at each end): ..."les deux portes du caisson et du puits taient ouvertes pour laisser passer le bateau". (The 2 doors of the caisson and pit (or well) were LREFLdAfTRNLCO "opened to let the boat through). "LREFLdAfTRNLOO However it could be read that the caisson and exit doorway on the side of the pit each had one door - making the pair. Probably this is what he meant... LREFLdAfTRNLiO Also he states that the building of a second caisson was suspended and that the mechanism for the raising and lowering this caisson was much simpler (than in LREFLdAfTRNLO the first). "Quant la seconde cluse flotteur qui est reste sans excution, bien que le mcanisme en dut paratre d'une application beaucoup plus facile." (As LREFLdAfTRNLO for the second floating lock this has remained without use, although the mechanism of it would appear to be a much simpler implementation). LREFLdAfTRNLO As a footnote Dutens relates that a French Engineer (M. Sganzin) observed that the first caisson mechanism at Combe Hay was soon modified and was thus 0LREF LREFLdAfTRNLO very similar to another planned caisson lock mechanism for the canal at Ruabon (near Wrexham in Wales). (My emphasis). There are three possible interpretations of these passages: ILREFLdAfTRNLO (1) the first lock used the rack and pinion gear to raise and lower the caisson whilst the second made more use of adjusting the mass of the caisson by water. LREFLdAfTRNLO y(2) Dutens is describing another, cradle-caisson lock, patented by Rowland & Pickering, in another part of the country. yLREFLdAfTRNL O (3) The second (Combe Hay) lock was different from the first and was much more like that of Rowland & Pickering's design. This is most unlikely. However LREFLdAfTRNL'O see later!. LREFLdAfTRNL3O Just how Weldon's device was to be like that of the said Rowland & Pickerings' is not made clear. It is evident from Dutens that he believed that their design LREFLdAfTRNLMO was superior to that of Weldon's, and would almost certainly have worked. I, too, believe it was superior. However, accepting the 'classic' reason for the demise LREFLdAfTRNLYO sof Weldon's lock - that of building it in Fullers Earth, - R&P's design would have foundered for the same reason! sLREFLdAfTRNLeO "As to the second floating lock which was not constructed, even though its mechanism must have seemed much easier, I shall content myself with reporting 0LREFLREFLdAfTRNLO from Reess (sic) (who states that) Messrs Rowland and Pickering took out a patent on the 18th of March 1794 for the invention of a barrel vault- or cradle- LREFLdAfTRNLO mobile lock, which, supported by props borne by a large plunger (diver), was able to be raised or lowered, so as to connect, according to need, with the level of LREFLdAfTRNLO the upper or lower reach whenever boats are ready to enter the airlock". (Translated from the French). (The boat entered an open-top "caisson" with doors at 0FLREFWLREFLdAfTRNLO each end. The enormous mass was counterbalanced by a giant watertight box in water. There were struts that connected the two together (the "caisson" or LREFLdAfTRNLO cradle being directly atop of the watertight box ("plunger or diver")). The cradle, when it descended, did so in an air-filled shaft. There were clever devices LREFLdAfTRNLO (spirals of weights and/or weights in conical barrels) to counter the apparent loss in mass as the struts sank into the water.) LREFLdAfTRNLO Other interesting snippets from the few pages I have are: William Smith (not unreasonably) visited the Combe Hay site. (Torrens dates this as 1798 and 9) LREFLdAfTRNLO Dutens states that Reess (sic) gives more detail on ..."which pumps are used by the boatmen who are shut away in the caisson aboard their boat in order to LREFLdAfTRNLO empty or to bring in the necessary volume of water in order to lighten or load the boat; and how the air pipes work so as to prevent accidents which would LREFLdAfTRNLO result from a lack of air in a situation where some circumstances would hold the caisson and the men below the water for too long." (translated form the LREFLdAfTRNL O French). (One wonders whether the caisson was thus served by a suitable flexible (leather?) pipe from its roof to the atmosphere on the higher level). No such LREFLdAfTRNL O Amention is made of this sensible precaution in Weldon's patent. ALREFLdAfTRNL O %Dutens observed the inclined plane. %LREFLdAfTRNL 7O Dutens states not just that the walls of the chamber bulged but that they collapsed, and that this had led to the total abandonment of the workings ..." even LREFLdAfTRNL QO though they had got the diver/plunger to work!" (My emphasis). The plunger/diver was a term reserved for R&P's airtight box. Surely, if it had been Weldon's DLREF LREFxLREFLdAfTRNL O design, he would have used the word "caisson". Again this reinforces the possiblity that the first caisson lock of Weldon's was modified to accommodate LREFLdAfTRNL O refinements from Rowland and Pickering's design. Very interesting, but hard to believe, especially as, if fully implemented, it would have necessitated the well LREFLdAfTRNL O to be twice as deep! Perhaps only minor alterations were made to Weldon's first design and that this explains the forementioned differences in the accounts of LREFLdAfTRNL O bhow the effective mass of the caisson was changed to raise or lower it. For this reason a Boat lift was promoted, by LREFLdAfTRNLnO Fussell and others(see later) Some 8 miles of this branch (seen as likely to be the most profitable part, serving collieries) were built, but the cost was more than LREFLdAfTRNLnO had been estimated. After unsuccessfully trying to raise more funds in 1803, work was abandoned. Various reasons have been put forward for this loss in money LREFLdAfTRNLn+O Cincluding the costs of the Napoleonic wars and rogue shareholders. CLREFLdAfTRNLn7O ~ It had been intended that the canal would carry mainly coal, but it is believed that only one contractor's boat ever used it ~LREFLdAfTRNLnCO LREFLdAfTRNLnOO The canal suffered from being built from the middle with no complete "ends". Attempts were made in 1825 to revive the project, but this too failed. LREFLdAfTRNLn[O LREFLdAfTRNLngO Chief engineer was a Mr Bennett, living nearby in Frome. He was also one of the Committee's parliamentary deputation in 1797. However in 1803 when construction of the canal had |LREFLdAfTRNLsO rceased, he became the Chief Engineer to the SCC (Somersetshire Coal Canal), where he was senior to William Smith. |rLREFLdAfTRNLO |LREFLdAfTRNLO FUSSELL'S BALANCE LOCK. Crossing over the drove road and descending the far side, the other face of the bridge can be seen, but all trace of the canal westwards has disappeared. LREF$LdAfTRNL!O LREF$LdAfTRNL-O Enthusiasts want to preserve the Murtry aqueduct, at Hapsford near Frome, for future generations. They have spent the last few years clearing trees and undergrowth LREF$LdAfTRNL9O from the structure and now need to carry out a full structural survey in order to develop a management plan for its future conservation. LREF$LdAfTRNLEO LREF$LdAfTRNLQO Money to carry out the study has come from the Somerset Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund, which ensures that some of the money raised by quarrying in LREF$LdAfTRNL]O KSomerset is ploughed back into local environmental and community projects. KLREF$LdAfTRNLiO LREF$LdAfTRNLuO The aqueduct, part of which is on land owned by Hanson Aggregates, dates back to 1796 and was built to carry a branch-line of the Dorset and Somerset Canal from LREF$LdAfTRNLO 3Frome through Coleford to the Nettlebridge valley. 3LREF$LdAfTRNLO LREF$LdAfTRNLO It was intended to carry coal from the Mendip collieries to Frome and then into Dorset and Wiltshire. However the project ran out of money and the main line of the LREF$LdAfTRNLO ccanal was never built. The branch line was nearly completed but never used for commercial traffic. cLREF$LdAfTRNLO LREF$LdAfTRNLO Derrick Hunt, chairman of the Dorset and Somerset Canal Study Group said he was delighted that the conservation project would be able to move forward, with help LREF$LdAfTRNLO from the sustainability fund. He said: "This is a very important part of the industrial heritage of this part of Somerset which we are trying to preserve. We are very LREF$LdAfTRNLO dgrateful to Hanson and the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund for assisting us with this project." dLREF$LdAfTRNLO LREF$LdAfTRNLO Hanson's land manager John Dutson added: " Quarries in Somerset are putting a lot of money into the Sustainability Fund and this is a good example of how money LREF$LdAfTRNLO ?raised from local industry is going to benefit local projects. ?LREF$LdAfTRNLO LREF$LdAfTRNLO Notes to editors DLREF$LREF&LREF$LdAfTRNLO Funding for this project has come from the Somerset Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund. Last year the government introduced a levy of 1.60 on every tonne of LREF$LdAfTRNL)O aggregate sold from UK quarries. Some of the money raised from the levy around 28 million a year is channelled into a UK Sustainability Fund to support LREF$LdAfTRNL5O &environmental and community projects. &LREF$LdAfTRNLAO LREF$LdAfTRNLMO The bulk of this fund is administered by English Nature, English Heritage and the Countryside Agency. But as one of the three major quarrying areas in the country, LREF$LdAfTRNLYO Somerset County Council receives a proportion to direct to projects which enhance the quality of the local environment and contribute to social progress. LREF$LdAfhRulTRNLeO LREF$LdAfTRNLO Fussell's Balance Lock. LREF)TRNLO LREF)INVITRNLOsThe iron master, James Fussell, of Mells, patented in 1798 a "balance lock" or boat lift, so a trial 20ft lift for sLREF+TRNL O jthe Dorset & Somerset Canal was built at Barrow Hill, near Frome. It had a large masonry chamber, divided jLREF+TRNLOlinto two parts. Each part contained a caisson (or tank) of water, to accommodate 10-ton boats. The caissons lLREF+TRNL0Onwere counterbalanced and supported by chains. The lift was successfully demonstrated in 1800 and the pits for nLREF+TRNLBOmfour other "balance locks" were also dug. However, their remains are not accessible by any public footpath. mLREF+TRNLTO_This is an interesting and no-doubt competent design avoiding Weldon's problem with completely X>LREF-LREF/LREF0LREF1TRNL O fcovered watertight caissons. (3D picture of Weldon's caisson lock ) (These, as can be seen, were open XLREF1#LREF3LREF4$LREF5TRNL"OZat the top and thus similar to the Rowland and Pickering design) Sketch of R&P's design.. XALREF5LREF7LREF8LREF9TRNL7O LREF9TRNLLObThe chains slung underneath the caissons were to counteract exactly the change in mass of caisson bLREF9TRNLaObplus boat as the top chain was wound or unwound around the giant wheels. The very top wheel has a bLREF9TRNLvOcshaft attached to it (see pic.) which could act as a brake. Movement of the dual caissons was made cLREF9TRNLOapossible by increasing the mass of the top caisson through the introduction of sufficient water. aLREF9TRNLO LREF9TRNLOdSeasoned sceptics will no doubt see the only real problem with this design is in the maintenance of dLREF9TRNLOdwatertight "doors' at the end of the caisson when it had to 'mate' with a similar door set into the dLREF9TRNLOibrick-work at both levels. LREFaLdAfTRNLGO We'll start with the latter. LREFaLdAfTRNLSO LREFaLdAfTRNL_O 2003 Dig near Lock 5 DLREFaLREFfLREFaLdAfTRNLkO LREFaLdAfTRNLwO A masive excavator was brought in to dig a hole 30 ft deep in Caisson Field. Some of the evidence (Richard lists 16 points in his article in the "The Weigh-House" Autumn 2003. pp 14- 19) ~LREFaLdAfTRNLO m 1. The 1804 map was traced onto a 1970 map. There was a suspicoius spoil heap near by (see next diagram), with enough room for a second caisson lock on top of it. {LREFaLdAfTRNLO 4.The 1804 map showed stop gates that were missing on the 1884 map. What were the stop gates protecting if not the caisson and its tunnel(s)? 5. Assuming the LREFaLdAfTRNLO caisson had a drop of 46 feet, the various levels (level of the spoil heap and upper pound water level) match near-perfectly. LREFaLdAfTRNLO The good news is that proper archaeological examination of the whole site may be possible if support is granted from English Heritage. Watch this space. LREFaLdAfTRNLO LREFaLdAfTRNLO For a detailed account of the dig and all the various findings please see The Weigh House mag. No. 21 (Autumn 1997). However, Mike Chapman's article on this is LREFaLdAfTRNLO reproduced below. LREFaLdAfhRulTRNLO Following last year's geophysical survey by Geo-Quest Associates on the south side of Caisson House (in what was once part of Caisson Field),and the discovery of LREFaLdAfTRNL!O an early map (c.1804) showing its location in the same area, the opportunity arose to test the new findings by means of a trial excavation. This area, not far from the LREFaLdAfTRNL-O chestnut tree identified long ago by Dr. Hugh Torrens as being the probable site of the Caisson, had already been subjected to various unproductive 'prospective digs' LREFaLdAfTRNL9O over the years, none of which had been recorded or analysed. On this occasion the excavation was to be carried out by hand under controlled archaeological LREFaLdAfTRNLEO conditions (though on a voluntary basis) by professional staff from Bath Archaeological Trust in collaboration with the Society's own works team. This project, LREFaLdAfTRNLQO directed by Marek Lewcun from the Trust, was given the backing of B&NES Built Heritage Department (managed by Mary Stacey who provided for the geophysical LREFaLdAfTRNL]O >survey) with supervision by Bob Sydes, Council Archaeologist. >LREFaLdAfTRNLiO LREFaLdAfTRNLuO The geophysical survey had detected several 'anomalies' roughly in the area of the lock site as shown on the map, one of which appeared to be a pair of parallel walls LREFaLdAfTRNLO not far below the surface (the geomagnetic equipment has a limited range of about 3 feet). Being of similar scale to the known dimensions of the lock, they were LREFaLdAfTRNLO interpreted (with a 70 per cent 'confidence rating') as being the walls of the Caisson chamber. Next to them was a much larger interference which extended towards LREFaLdAfTRNLO the present entrance gate to the field. It was interesting to compare these results with a pre-excavation survey carried out by Adrian Tuddenham using his own ground LREFaLdAfTRNLO resistance equipment. Although in this instance no 'walls' were indicated, a similar large-scale disturbance was detected towards the gate. LREFaLdAfTRNLO LREFaLdAfTRNLO A trench 1 metre wide and 11 metres in length was cut across the line of these 'walls' in a roughly north-south direction, later extended a further 6 metres northward LREFaLdAfTRNLO to examine the large anomaly towards the gate. The southern end of the trench terminated a few metres north of the turf line of the old boundary wall of Caisson LREFaLdAfTRNLO Field (removed some time after the field was subdivided by the construction of the GWR Limpley Stoke railway in 1910) which proved a useful reference point. It LREFaLdAfTRNLO was at this end of the trench that the original ground level was confirmed to be much as it is today, but that from this point northward the whole surface was found to LREFaLdAfTRNLO have been lowered by stripping off between 2 to 3 feet of subsoil and underlying natural clay. This had later been filled in with a mottled clay and levelled off with LREFaLdAfTRNLO subsoil. Also encountered, crossing the trench, were traces of a recent cutting; possibly the result of a previous 'Caisson-hunt. LREFaLdAfTRNLO LREFaLdAfTRNLO Working northward to the point where the 'walls' were expected, the lowered ground surface was found to be covered with a thick layer of dense blue clay LREFaLdAfTRNLO (presumably canal puddling clay) containing large quantities of nails and other canal ironware. No walls were found, and it was immediately apparent that it was the LREFaLdAfTRNL)O large iron content of this clay which had given such a strong reading, suggestive of walls, during the magnetometer survey. Also found among the small finds in this LREFaLdAfTRNL5O layer was a George III half-penny clearly dated 1807. Half-pennies of this kind, with milled edge, were only minted in the two year's of 1806 and1807 and although LREFaLdAfTRNLAO lsomewhat corroded, this example showed little wear, indicating that it was lost soon after the latter date. lLREFaLdAfTRNLMO LREFaLdAfTRNLYO Some 12 feet further on, approaching the northern end of the trench, the blue clay increased in thickness to just below turf level. Immediately below the clay at this LREFaLdAfTRNLeO point, showing through the earlier ground surface, a band of packed chippings and mortar about 2 feet in width and vertically edged was found crossing the trench on LREFaLdAfTRNLqO an east-west axis. This band was not detected until a late stage owing to a number of large unworked stones and boulders which lay on top of it, and it was therefore LREFaLdAfTRNL}O not possible to determine its depth or course downward in the time available. Although a quantity of the blue clay mixed with lumps of mortar occurred for a further LREFaLdAfTRNLO 4 feet, the band of chippings evidently marked the southern edge of a deep excavation containing a massive infill of rubble and stoney clay. The depth of this infill LREFaLdAfTRNLO could not be ascertained, although its edge was followed downward a further 2 feet below the earlier ground surface to a maximum depth of 5 feet below ground LREFaLdAfTRNLO level. LREFaLdAfTRNLO LREFaLdAfTRNLO It was at this stage that it was decided to extend the trench northward to examine the stoney rubble and clay infill of the deeper excavation, a rough calculation of the LREFaLdAfTRNLO width of the Caisson being made to ensure that the trench was of sufficient length to detect the opposite edge of the chamber (assuming that its southern edge existed LREFaLdAfTRNLO in the vicinity of the band of chippings). It was found that the surface of rubble infill, which included a thin layer of yellow clay levelled off with overspill from the LREFaLdAfTRNLO blue puddling clay quickly rose to turf level before falling off towards the gate. Although the trench was taken down to 4 feet below the turf, the depth of the infill LREFaLdAfTRNLO could not be ascertained, nor was there any evidence of the northern edge of the chamber. At the end of the trench, some 18 feet from the gate, the surface of the infill LREFaLdAfTRNLO had fallen to over 2 feet below ground level but evidently extended some way further northward, perhaps beyond the field gate. It was presumably this rubble which LREFaLdAfTRNLO produced the large anomaly on the two geophysical surveys, a feature which was initially ignored owing to the general observation that gateways tend to accumulate LREFaLdAfTRNL O such disturbed material over time. It was not then realised that the gate and hedge had only been installed relatively recently, after the old boundary wall of Caisson LREFaLdAfTRNLO +Field had been removed as mentioned above. +LREFaLdAfTRNL%O LREFaLdAfTRNL1O Although such a large (and apparently deep) excavation was to be expected on the site of the Caisson, as indicated exactly on the canal map, the only structural LREFaLdAfTRNL=O element found was the band of chippings at its southern edge. This however, is a feature that might be expected in association with dismantled masonry - supporting LREFaLdAfTRNLIO the opinion that, following the removal of the superstructure (but before backfilling), much of the stone lining of the upper part of the lock chamber was removed for LREFaLdAfTRNLUO use elsewhere. Certainly the amount of blue puddling clay lying beyond it (about 12 feet in extent) would have been sufficient to provide the basis of the waterproof LREFaLdAfTRNLaO Vembankment (or 'angle of response') needed to support the superstructure of the lock. VLREFaLdAfTRNLmO LREFaLdAfTRNLyO The presence of so much ironwork in the puddling clay still requires explanation, but the finding of the half-penny in this material suggests that the site was LREFaLdAfTRNLO backfilled in 1807 or soon after in agreement with the mapping evidence. The Caisson was apparently still open when the lock flight and pump were installed early in LREFaLdAfTRNLO 1805, as shown on the early c.1804 map, but had disappeared by the time of the next datable map of the lock flight, c.1809. The rubble infill was barren of human LREFaLdAfTRNLO ]artifacts and was presumably construction material excavated from elsewhere along the canal. ]LREFaLdAfTRNLO LREFaLdAfTRNLO Following the inspection of the site by the Council Archaeologist it was decided that, with these findings, a more exact exploration of the site is now possible. LREFaLdAfTRNLO Archaeological examination should also be made at sites nearby which related to the Caisson, an overall project which might well be given support by English LREFaLdAfTRNLO Heritage. Such sites could include the Inclined Plane, the Engine House, the Caisson Exit Tunnel etc. and in particular the Terminal Basin and its adjoining LREFaLdAfTRNLO subterranean chamber. Although a few preliminary levels were taken on this occasion for the trench, it would also be necessary to establish the level of the canal bed LREFaLdAfTRNLO in the basin to obtain a clearer picture of its relation to the Caisson. It was also concluded that, if permission could be obtained, considerable time would be saved in LREFaLdAfTRNLO Dfuture excavations if machinery was employed for surface stripping. We have uncovered the capping of the disused well and found (with the geophone) that there is probably a solid LREFLdAfTRNLsO connection a long way underground between the well and the engine foundations. There should be another work party on that site in the Spring. LREFLdAfTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO ? Concerning the adit to the base of this pumping station site: ?LREFLdAfTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO You will now find it is drawn straight and with two intermediate shafts - This is because Richard Hignett came up just before Christmas and found the spoil heaps LREFLdAfTRNLO from what appear to be the intermediate shafts. It all adds up to a straight adit. A very exciting find because it was made from a prediction based on engineering LREFLdAfTRNLO calculations, we didn't just blunder about and trip over the shafts. Richard actually reasoned where they should be and went straight to them. We are kicking LREFLdAfTRNLO ourselves for not spotting them before, one of them was only yards from where we were moving wood; but, of course, we didn't have his knowledge. 0LREFLREFLdAfhRulTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO Autumn 2000 0 LREFLREFLdAfTRNLO LREFLdAfTRNLO 3 The base of the chimney stack has been uncovered. 3LREFLdAfTRNLO L Steps leading down to this base from the engine house have been excavated. LLREFLdAfTRNLO _An inspection chamber under the bed-block of the steam cylinder of the engine has been exposed _LREFLdAfTRNL)O Q Between the boiler and the leat an additional flue passage has been discovered. QLREFLdAfTRNL5O An inspection channel 12 feet underground has been partly excavated. This leads directly into the well itself. The clay plug was only partly dug uout. We will return LREFLdAfTRNLAO in the Spring. LREFLdAfTRNLMO w BUT, please note that for safety reasons the whole site has been infilled and the footpath tidied-up and 'improved'.
